"That is a clever argument, but you know perfectly well that they may be like you, but they are certainly not like... me!"

"Why not?" the Marquis asked.

"Because we live in worlds apart."

"There are, however, two things which provide a bridge between all worlds, however different they may be," the Marquis said.

"What are they?" Vanessa asked curiously.

"The first is beauty," he replied, "and you are very beautiful, Vanessa, and the second is love!"

There was a note in his voice which made her quiver and because she was so vividly conscious of him sitting beside her and the fact that his shoulder touched hers she looked away.

She stared out the window, although there was little to see except an occasional flare from a linkman's torch or the lights of a passing carriage.

"I am not going to talk to you tonight," the Marquis said after a moment, "but there are many things we have to discuss, Vanessa."

"What sort of... things?" she asked.

She only knew it was difficult to breathe and there seemed to be a constriction in her throat that had never been there before.

Yet there was a warmth and a wonder creeping over her which made her feel as if the curtain were rising on a stage where she and the Marquis stood alone.

"I think it was fate that we should meet," the Marquis said in his deep voice.

"Fate?" Vanessa questioned.

"Fate that you should come to my room that night at the Inn," the Marquis answered.

"Fate that I should have felt compelled to see you again. Fate that because we have meant something to each other these last few days, you should have saved the Prince's life."

He paused and then asked:

"Did you for a moment, Vanessa, think of going "for help to anyone but me?"

"No, of course not," she answered.

"Have you asked yourself why?" he enquired.

She was still for a moment and then she answered a little incoherently:
